The Heart of Scottish Poetry: Robert Burns

Dumfries is intrinsically linked to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. When our Masons from further a field come to visit Dumfries, we highly recommend a visit to the Robert Burns House, where he spent the last years of his life, and the Burns Mausoleum, his final resting place, which offers a deep dive into his life and legacy. These sites provide a tangible connection to the poet’s world, showcasing original manuscripts and personal belongings. Also, did you know, Robert Burns was also a Freemason?

Medieval Majesty: Caerlaverock Castle

While ‘Discovering Freemasonry Dumfries’ why not look into the unique triangular architecture of Caerlaverock Castle, a medieval fortress surrounded by a moat. This castle is not just a relic of the past but a portal to Scotland’s tumultuous history, offering breathtaking views and a captivating history lesson on its strategic importance over the centuries. Family Adventure: Mabie Farm Park and Mabie Forest

At Thistle Lodge No.62, we recognise that Freemasonry is about brotherhood, but that includes our commitment to our families, whether that is our children, grandchildren or even more. So for those traveling with family, Mabie Farm Park is a must-visit. It’s a place where children can interact with farm animals and enjoy various outdoor activities. From tractor rides to woodland walks, it’s a perfect spot for a family day out in Dumfries. Take in the children having fun and reflect on the wonderful experiences they are able to have.

If a tougher stroll is more your style, visit Mabie Forest instead. With beautiful views across our region, the view at the top is worth the wait.

A Step Back in Time: Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura

The Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history, which as a Dumfries Masonic Lodge, we couldn’t recommend enough. From prehistoric remains to local crafts, the museum’s diverse collection is capped with a demonstration of the historic Camera Obscura, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. It’s a fascinating place and real chance to deep-dive into our town’s culture.
